SINGAPORE: Singapore Shooting Association (SSA) President Laurence Wee has fired a salvo at member clubs SAFRA, SAFSA and the Singapore Gun Club (SGC).
The three clubs, who have accused the SSA of being an "exclusive club", are unhappy with developments at the national sports association ahead of this Saturday's Extraordinary General Meeting (EOGM) and may quit to start a rival association.
Wee, who described the clubs' actions as "childish", sought to clarify matters on Thursday.
The disagreement between the parties stemmed from the SSA's letters to SAFRA and SAFSA to clarify if the organisations were registered societies, which is a requirement under the association's constitution.
Both shooting clubs then claimed that the SSA had informed them that their status would be relegated from that of ordinary member to associate member, which would see them losing the right to vote or hold office.
But Wee insisted on Thursday that the association had to adhere to strict rules due to its charity status. "We have been asking them if they are registered and waiting for an answer since November but they have not replied," he said.
"Every member needs to be registered to be a legal entity. Somehow, a mistake was made in the past and we need to clean it up now."
To solve the problem, the SSA has suggested that both clubs register with the Registry of Societies, while the other option is for their parent bodies - SAFRA and SAFSA - to sign up as ordinary members.
But Wee is not confident that the matter will be resolved any time soon. "There are a lot of ways forward but whether they wish for a peaceful resolution is another thing. They seem to have a hidden agenda," he said.
Just last September, the SSA was embroiled in a disagreement with the SGC, SAFRA and SAFSA after the clubs were barred from the election for allegedly failing to submit the names and identity card numbers of their nominees three days before the Annual General Meeting.
They were then disqualified from voting and presidential hopeful Michael Vaz was barred from the election.
